HOW MIGHT WE IMPROVE ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR UNDOCUMENTED COMMUNITIES?

Undocumented immigrants face unique challenges which stem from language barriers, lack of information, discrimination, risk of deportation, affordability, and minimal resources. As a result, this demographic is less likely to have health insurance and more likely to prolong visits to any clinic, doctor or hospital. Due to their limited access to employer-based health coverage and restrictions for public coverage, undocumented immigrants are far more likely to be uninsured than citizens (47% vs. 15%). In addition, undocumented groups are more likely to report negative experiences with healthcare providers and are less likely to have a regular source of care because of such experiences. Another issue arises with The Affordable Care Act, which does not extend coverage through Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security, even though many pay taxes.
